Growing environmental concerns have led to recurring discussions about the need for greater responsibility and awareness in the use of available water resources. With this in mind, industrial plants are adopting systems of water reuse in order to increase the number of water use cycles.
The system
One of the models conceived and supplied by Ecosan – the market leader in equipment for the primary and secondary treatment of domestic and industrial effluent – for the sugar cane and alcohol sector, was designed with a maximum flow of 15 m3/h and comprises the following: Mechanized Grit Separator – SAM, Oil-Water Separator – TPI, Flock Chamber with Axial Turbine Blade Flocculator, High Flow Rate Modular Decantation Chamber, two Filtration Chambers with Sand Bed and Activated Carbon Filtration, as well as a Chemical Dosing System.
As Ecosan’s Managing Director André Telles points out, the Wastewater Treatment Plant will produce clarified and filtered water originating from car washes and cleaning of parts which may be reused in industry, for cleaning floors, in gardening, and in similar contexts, but not for human or animal consumption.
Understanding the process
The first stage consists of removing the sand from the water by gravitational means. From there the water passes through an oil-water separator to clarify the water and ensure correct disposal of the oil.
The Plant’s flow rate is controlled by parshal flume. The liquid is channeled to the flocculation chambers where the water’s impurities coagulate and agglutinate. This is followed by the water decantation process.
Finally, the liquid undergoes an antifoam filtering and dosing process, the objective being to separate off the detergent present in the treated water.

The treated effluent is used to irrigate the golf courses of the Permambuco coast’s first planned neighbourhood or released into the Pirapama river.
Ecosan suplied and installed the Wastewater Treatment Park at the Paiva Reserve, the Permambuco coast’s first planned neighborhood. Strategically located between Recife and the Suape complex, it is an area of 526 hectares with an 8.5 kilometer strip of beaches and surrounded by the Atlantic ocean. Designed and developed by Oderbrecht Realizações Imobiliárias in partnership with the Cornélio Brennand and Ricardo Brennand groups, the Paiva Reserve comprises gated residential communities, business condominiums, schools, hotels and all necessary infrastructure.
The Wastewater Treatment Plant, built by Flamac Incorporação e Construção, comprises primary effluent treatment and an activated sludge system using prolonged aeration with mechanical dewatering of the generated sludge, and disinfection by ultraviolet radiation. The effluent can be released into the Pirapama river or reused to water golf courses. What sets it apart is its modular design which enables a four-step implementation. This will help it to keep up with anticipated population growth thereby minimizing the need for further short-term investment. The plant’s average flow rate is 152 liters per second with a maximum flow rate of 229,06 l/s.
“The adopted treatment method minimizes the risk of unpleasant odors as it uses an aerobic process throughout, even for sludge digestion. It is the ideal process for a development like the Paiva Reserve. The nature of the place means it requires a treatment solution that stays out of the way, causing the minimum of local impact as well as being easy to use and, of course, guaranteeing effluent of the desired quality.“ says André Telles, Ecosan’s Managing Director.

The system of oil and water separation at Galeão International Airport as supplied by Ecosan, the leading company in the supply of equipment for the treatment of primary and secondary domestic and industrial effluents, is now operational, with the aim of meeting the norms that establish the criteria and standards for release of liquid effluents, and the framework for design, installation, and operation of the oily water drainage system for service stations.
Making use of ‘turnkey’ products and services, Ecosan was hired by RIOgaleão, the operator responsible for the expansion and maintenance of the airport, to implement the project. This meant the manufacture, transport, installation and commissioning of all equipment, accessories, instruments and tests for the oil water separator, including the creation of operating manuals, the carrying out of test runs and a list of spare parts.
Water and oil separation
André Ricardo Telles, Ecosan’s Managing Director, explains that water with oil concentrations above certain permitted levels needs to go through an oil-water separation treatment prior to being discharged into natural reservoirs.
Airports are an ideal place for the application of this type of treatment as airplane stopping areas represent a potential oil derivatives spillage risk, according to Telles.
“There might be spills of hydraulic system oil, grease used in airplane component lubrication or from aviation fuel. Should a leak occur, and were it to rain shortly after, the rain water would release the oil into the environment”, Telles points out.
With the installation of the system, the oil is separated from the water, stored and discharged appropriately, without running the risk of its entering the environment. The treated water is channeled into the drainage system from which it is safely discharged into the environment.
Process
Water collection in the oil contaminated area is carried out of by means of channels provided with grilles that impede the entrance of large residues which may block the system. This water is stored in pipes underneath the channels. These pipes are capable of collecting a volume equivalent to the first 13 mm of rain to fall over the area.
The routing of the oily water to the treatment locale is by gravity feeding or pumping, depending on where the storage pipes are sited. The fluid is transported to the Calming Inlet, where a pre-treatment is performed that reverses the process of emulsification imposed on the mixture when it is pumped.
After this pre-treatment the water is channeled to the oil-water separator to be safely discharged. Oil stored in the separator should be removed periodically and disposed of appropriately.

Ecosan – Membrane Systems by BHY announces the domestic launch of ultrafiltration, microfiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis equipment
Ecosan, the market leader in equipment for the primary and secondary treatment of domestic and industrial effluent, announces a commercial partnership with BHY of Argentina, a significant player in the Argentinian market. This partnership has led to the creation of a new business unit to be known as ‘Ecosan Membrane Systems by BHY’. As a result, products manufactured by BHY Argentina, with their own development cycle and distribution, will be launched in Brazil, in order to provide ultrafiltration, microfiltration and nanofiltration solutions. These solutions are geared towards use in the chemical, cosmetic, dairy, paper and cellulose, sugar and alcohol and sanitation industries.
BHY Argentina possesses reverse osmosis applications of from 0,5m3/h to 1500 m3/h and feed water conductivity that can hit 40.000 ?S/cm, depending on drilled well depth. According to Ecosan’s Technical Manager Alberto Abrikian, this high salinity equipment has a specific design enabling waste recirculation, thereby guaranteeing system integrity. An additional novelty for the Latin American market is energy recovery, leading to a reduction of as much as 50% in energy bills.
Abrikian points out the equipment enjoys high pressure vases of up to 600 psi leading to energy recovery of as much as 50% of the equipment’s total energy consumption. He explains that, “Normally, 5 to 7 kWh are necessary to desalinate each m3. However, with energy recovery this is reduced to only 2 or 3.”
Abrikian emphasizes that the partnership will facilitate the meeting of pent-up demand. “On the whole, desalinization systems are fairly heavy on electricity. In a world of increasingly high energy costs sustainability and energy consumption reduction are vital considerations and result in competitive advantages.”
The systems offered by the partnership can filter where there is high salinity, render water suitable for use in industrial boiler systems, enable the reuse of effluents in cooling systems and also substitute for and/or improve conventional water treatment systems. Ecosan will also be broadening its portfolio using the Argentinian leader’s technology, providing improved effluent treatments such as MBR, and specific systems for the dairy sector, for milk and cheese processing as well as whey concentration. According to Abrikian, the use of micro and ultrafiltration in milk production is an alternative to heat treatments, and results in a final product of higher quality with the additional bonus of reduced energy consumption.
The nanofiltration whey concentration systems result in lower energy costs for the dairy sector when compared with conventional heat or reverse osmosis systems. Furthermore, these systems concentrate the protein which may subsequently be used as a raw material in the company’s own production or sold to other companies. Transport costs are lower as its concentrated state means it takes up less room.
For Daniella Telles, the Chemical Engineer responsible for the development of BHY Argentina in Brazil, the partnership will be mutually beneficial, creating greater business volumes for the two companies as well as higher quality and energy savings for clients, within the context of the security associated with the traditional Ecosan Brazil brand.

Directors of the two companies visited potential clients for ultrafiltration, microfiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membrane equipment.
From April 10 to 14, executives of Bridge Hydrogen S. A. (BHY), headquartered in the Argentinian province of Santa Fe, and their counterparts from Ecosan, with its headquarters in the São Paulo state municipality of Santo André, made a number of joint visits to companies within the São Paulo metropolitan region. Their objective was to demonstrate the membrane system technology incorporated in the ultrafiltration, microfiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membrane equipment manufactured by the Argentinian company and marketed and distributed by its Brazilian partner.
This technology, developed by BHY, offers solutions to the problem of obtaining the high quality water required by the chemical, cosmetic, dairy, paper and cellulose, sugar and alcohol and sanitation industries. The Ecosan-BHY partnership generated a new business unit known as, Ecosan – Membrane Systems by BHY. The latter will be responsible for seeking new clients, installation of systems as well as after-sales service and technical assistance for this equipment, manufactured in Argentina and installed in Brazil.
The engineer, partner and director of BHY, Nicolas Canello had this to say: “Our partnership started in December 2015 but we had yet to make any joint visits to the client. The first one occurred in the third week of April with our visit to Pollutec Brazil. We opted to partner up with Ecosan as it is a highly reputable company, well-known throughout the Brazilian market. For our part we intend to provide all the technical and commercial backing necessary, not only so as to achieve equipment sales, but also with an eye on future market needs and with the aim of increasing our presence in the longer term. In Brazil the main markets for our equipment are those of environmental sanitation, the dairy industry, the food and drink sectors, the paper industry and the sugar-alcohol sector, or, indeed, any company that requires high quality water.
According to André Ricardo Telles, Ecosan’s Managing Director, “As regards membrane technology, Argentina stole a march on Brazil as a result of the need to use water from the water table, a more brackish water than that which Brazil gets from its reservoirs. BHY is even about to start up some equipment installed in a Petrobras refinery in Argentina where water salinity is very high. The water supply problems in Argentina are similar to those of the Brazilian north east. This broader and more pressing problem meant that Argentina had to rapidly increase its technical knowledge in this area much earlier than Brazil.”

Ecosan Brazil will be responsible for the treatment process, machine and equipment supply and system integration
The new passenger terminal at Goiânia international airport, with anticipated opening in the first half of 2016, is at the forefront of market trends as it will be the first in Brazil to make use of safe parameters and concepts in the treatment of direct water reuse. It is an innovative project that enables the reuse of gray waters from cooling towers, sinks, showers, water fountains and rainwater.
Ecosan, the leading company in equipment for primary and secondary treatment of domestic and industrial effluent, has been hired to develop and operate the system. Its Managing Director André Ricardo Telles, feels the initiative represents a new project concept. “Given water resource shortages, the system’s significant reduction in the cost and consumption of potable water in its operations is of great value. The adoption of these processes is a reflection of environmental and water resource concerns,” says Telles, who adds that the equipment and machinery employed at the terminal was installed and operational extremely quickly.
The gray water treatment system will receive the water tower discards on a daily basis. These will undergo constant chemical treatment for pH balance and adjustment, corrosion and incrustation control as well as control of algae growth. Infraero – (Brazilian acronym for Brazilian Airport Infrastructure Company) – will be monitoring parameters, whilst Ecosan Brazil will be responsible for the treatment process, machine and equipment supply, systems integration, training and start-up of operations and activities.
According to Telles, the system has four stages. The first stage consists of the separation of oil and water in coalescent blocks. The second stage includes a complete system of biological water treatment of water contaminated with organic material. It will pass through equalization, settling, aeration, sedimentation and polishing processes. The third stage comprises a physico-chemical treatment for the removal of other contaminants, and also mechanical filtration. To finish things off, an ultraviolet disinfection process. Ecosan’s Managing Director mentions in passing that passenger safety was always a primary concern. Electrical and automation parts of the project were created to meet the obligatory requirements of an area classified as an explosive environment, with all panels, motors, drives and other equipment being spark and explosion proof.

Under the banner of sustainable and aware societal development, promoting full exercise of citizenship and respect for the environment, Ecosan, leader in equipment for the primary and secondary treatment of domestic and industrial effluents, has just received its fifth Social Entrepreneur certificate.
The title of Social Entrepreneur is granted by the Ricardo Juncker Institute (IRJ) , a Civil Society Organization of Public Interest (OSCIP) that promotes human development and attempts to improve the quality of life of needy populations, especially in the São Bernardo do Campo (SP) municipality.
The IRJ’s president, Rosi Juncker, explains the importance of the work performed by Ecosan: “The impact is enormous, with direct benefits impacting on entire families. There have been improvements in information dissemination, vocational and professional training, awareness raising effects and quality of life improvements within a broad range of fields, in which, in normal circumstances, there would be little chance of progress. ”
Rosi goes on to say that the seal of Social Entrepreneur celebrates not just an agreement, but the actual efficacy of the company’s performance within its region and society, via IRJ projects and events. It may also serve to strengthen the company’s brand. “Our results are only achieved because we have this partnership”, says Rosi, adding that the title is offered to companies who have signed a 12 month Term of Commitment with the IRJ, the fee having been agreed beforehand and which is open ended as to renewal.
THE IRJ
During its nine years of existence, the Ricardo Juncker Institute has already served the needs of more than 25 thousand people, 19 charitable institutions and various communities in São Bernardo do Campo and Ipiranga. It has done this by means of job training workshops, lectures on health, citizenship and the environment; free services to the community, training and updating for institutions, and even partial scholarships for higher educational study.
As André Ricardo Telles, Ecosan’s Managing Director says, “We have been supporting the serious and effective work of the IRJ for almost six years. That we have received the Social Entrepreneur certificate yet again is indicative of the position of social responsibility adopted by Ecosan.”

The new passenger terminal at the Santa Genoveva Airport or Goiânia international airport, was ahead of the game in being the first in Brazil to use safe parameters and concepts in the treatment of direct water reuse, with an innovative project enabling the reuse of gray waters from cooling towers, sinks, showers, water fountains and rainwater. Although officially inaugurated on May 9th, it only started to operate from May 21st 2016.
The gray water treatment system receives the water tower discards on a daily basis. These undergo constant chemical treatment for pH balance and adjustment, corrosion and incrustation control as well as control of algae growth. Infraero – (Brazilian acronym for Brazilian Airport Infrastructure Company) – is responsible for monitoring parameters, whilst Ecosan Brazil’s responsibilities are treatment process, machine and equipment supply, training system integration, and start-up of operations.
Ecosan’s Managing Director points out that passenger safety was always a primary concern. Electrical and automation parts of the project were developed in such a way as to meet the obligatory requirements of an area classified as an explosive environment, with all panels, motors, drives and other equipment being spark and explosion proof.
José Constâncio da Silva Neto, the Environmental Prosecutor employed for the project by the Brazilian Airport Infrastructure Company (Infraero) feels that with its inaugurations out of the way, the terminal is just waiting to receive its finishing touches. “All the assembly work has been done. The system is anticipated to come on line in the second fortnight of June. However, it will only be possible to assess its efficiency after three or four months of use, or, in the worst of cases, six months. This is because we are talking about a biological process here, and it will take a while for the system to adapt itself to the effluents generated by the airport.” He adds that, “Although the reduction in consumption has yet to be defined, our expectation is that when it is fully operational, the system will be able to meet a considerable part of the airport’s total water needs. We estimate this at 30%, but, being optimistic, it could hit 40%.”

The company’s objective was to sign partnerships and find solutions for the oil, gas and energy markets.
Ecosan, the market leader in equipment for the primary and secondary treatment of domestic and industrial effluent, took part, from the 05 to the 07 of September, in an entrepreneurial mission in Italy. The aim was to see close up the state of the Italian and European markets so as to assess consumer trends in the agribusiness, mechanics and metallurgy, renewable energy, biotechnology, information technology and cosmetics sectors.
The mission is part of an agreement between the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) and the National Confederation of Industries (CNI) whose mutual objective is the promotion of Brazilian exports. The Brazilians were also present at the Milan Expo whose theme was summed up in the words, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.”
The program also included scheduled technical visits to those companies involved in the distribution chain, as well as to research centers and technological parks in various Italian regions, and a technical seminar focusing on those rules and regulations which must be met and adhered to in order to gain access to the Italian market.
“Dedication and commitment to quality are the essentials in maintaining stand-out status domestically and winning export contracts.” according to André Ricardo Telles, Ecosan’s Managing Director. The company took two engineers to Italy in the search for new partnerships and solutions for the oil, gas and energy markets.
